old away from his wife and two young children for up to two months at a time as his ship patrols a vast area of ocean, from the Kermadecs, around 1000km northeast of the North Island, to the Subantarctic Islands. However, Lt Commander MacLean says while there are challenges ahead, the rewards of the job are many. “Command is a dream job for any naval officer,” Lt Commander MacLean says. He says he plans to use the role as a way of increasing interaction between the Navy and the community, including anchoring Wellington off the Hibiscus Coast. “I want to connect with the community because the Navy is a key part of Auckland and has a large footprint here,” he says. “Devonport and the city centre get the lion’s share, but now I have the opportunity to bring some of that to Whangaparaoa – not only making the ship visible from shore, but also talking to schools and other groups.” He says while much of his specialist training in warfare will not be needed on the offshore patrol vessel, he was selected for the role because of tactical experience. The formal change of command ceremony in Devonport, on June 5, was bristling with high-ranking naval officers, including Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral Jack Steer, who officially presented Lt Commander MacLean with the symbol of command – a carved Maori paddle. The words “you have the ship,” spoken by former Wellington commander Lt Commander Phil Rowe, and Lt Commander MacLean’s response, “I have the ship” marked the change of command. Next month Lt Commander MacLean will take the helm of Wellington, which is one of the NZ Navy’s most state of the art ships, and once sea trials are over a series of maritime patrols will begin. Chinese volunteers lead first SOSSI planting The planting season at Shakespear Regional Park got underway recently, aided by the arrival of two busloads of Chinese people. Around 120 Chinese people helped SOSSI volunteers with planting a portion of the park at the eastern end of the peninsula on June 7. The group is part of the Chinese Conservation Education Trust, which was started in 2002 in collaboration with the Department of Conservation. It aims to educate Chinese people living in NZ about this country’s special places, plants and animals and plans to make planting at the park an annual activity. Around 1500 plants went in, with ranger Bruce Harrison describing the work as some of the best planting he’s seen in his 18 years with Council. deal in Rodney Rodney MP Mark Mitchell is talking tough when it comes to the possibility of a deal between National and the Conservatives that could see him lose his seat in Parliament. Conservative leader Colin Craig is asking John Key to do a “cup of tea” type deal in either Rodney, East Coast Bays or Upper Harbour electorates, assisting the Conservatives to get into parliament by not standing a candidate in opposition to Mr Craig in September’s general election. Mr Key has not ruled out a deal: a seat for Mr Craig has become more important for National as it seeks to shore up potential coalition partners following the resignation of Act MP John Banks. However Mr Mitchell told Hibiscus Matters last week that there will be no deal done in Rodney. “I will be the candidate and that’s that,” he says. “I am in this job to serve people, I earned that right in the last election and it means a lot to me.” Mr Mitchell romped home in the last election despite a concerted effort on behalf of the Conservatives, who polled a distant second (Mr Mitchell achieved a majority of more than 12,000 with more than 20,000 votes to Mr Craig’s 8000). However as a backbench MP he would not be high on the party’s list and if a deal is done in Rodney he could potentially miss out altogether. Both East Coast Bays MP Murray McCully and Paula Bennett, who received National’s nomination for the new Upper Harbour electorate, have said they do not want to roll over for the Conservatives. Ultimately the decision of which electorate Mr Craig will stand in is dependent upon any discussions with Prime Minister John Key, and it will be up to the National party to decide which, if any, MPs it is prepared to put on the list. Parties must finalise candidates by August.

There is no doubt in my mind that ratepayers should have the right to attend those Council workshops. I attend the occasional local board meeting and used to go to some of the Rodney District Council ones also. It is possible that most of the workshops are dull as ditchwater but there is an important principle here – the community deserves to have all the facts that Council has if it is to be a helpful and informed part of the decision making process. That is real consultation – not the form filling that passes for “consultation” and is

Devil in the detail Auckland Transport’s “draft parking discussion document” raises the possibility of charging for parking at its park and ride facilities as a way of funding more capacity. This could have a major affect on Auckland’s most far-flung park and rides, including Silverdale, where the cost of a bus ticket into the city is already high. Paying for parking could easily be the tipping point, making driving the cheaper option, despite the cost of petrol, sending commuters back into their cars. This would, of course, be totally counterproductive to Auckland Transport’s objective of “facilitating a transformational shift to public transport and reducing dependence on car travel”. However, how to fund transport infrastructure without an increasing emphasis on user pays, continues to be a curly question. The document says that, as an estimate, Auckland may require up to 10,000 additional park and ride spaces by 2040. Anyone using the Albany park and ride on weekdays knows that space is at a premium there and it is likely that Silverdale’s park and ride will fill up as soon as stage two is completed. AT says that charging at park ‘n’ rides would allow this demand to be managed, ensuring that customers can always find a park if they are willing to pay. It’s a claim based on experience in Canada where some cities allowed commuters to pay to reserve parks in the park and ride; if they didn’t use the park by a certain time it then became available for anyone else to use. Methods like this are being suggested because there is not enough land around existing park and rides to allow for major expansion of the facilities and land for new park and rides doesn’t come cheap. AT suggests that charges should not be introduced until a full business case has been undertaken that includes the benefits and the impact on public transport patronage. Until that information is available, the public is simply left wondering whether park and ride will remain a viable option. In addition, the document suggests ditching time limits in town centres where on-street parking is nearing capacity, in favour of meters. This may fail to impress Orewa’s BID, which went through a lengthy process to establish a 120 parking zone in its town centre, and Silverdale, which is doing the same. AT is seeking public feedback, which will inform its Parking Strategy – although it’s hard to give meaningful feedback when the 59-page document is so low on detail. Submissions can be made on AT’s website until June 30.

Council changes tack on lifejackets Local boaties are describing Auckland Council’s change of tack over the compulsory wearing of lifejackets on small vessels as a satisfying victory. Boaties were largely against the change suggested in Council’s draft Navigation Safety bylaw, which was a departure from the current regulation that all vessels carry lifejackets, to be worn at the skipper’s discretion. After drafting a bylaw that would have required everyone on vessels 6m or less to wear a lifejacket at all times, Council is likely to adopt a version that retains an element of skipper discretion. The wording that the governing body is expected to adopt next month is that lifejackets must be worn, but can be removed at the skipper’s discretion. It’s a subtle distinction but, according to Mike Cahill of the Hibiscus Coast Boating Club, a very important one. The club was at the forefront of opposition to compulsory lifejackets, saying that skipper accountability and responsibility are vital. This view was in line with around 80 percent of the 395 submissions on the bylaw. Mr Cahill says the only sticking point is that the club believes the boat size should be 4.8m or less, rather than 6m, but he’s pleased “common sense won the day”. “They say you can’t beat City Hall, but without our input I have no doubt that boaties would have been faced with an impractical and unenforceable bylaw.”
Bird scaring unsuccessful
The trial of a bird scaring system in Orewa town centre (HM June 4) has been discontinued by Destination Orewa Beach. The business association was hopeful that it could offer a solution to local cafés and restaurants plagued by birds, if its trial of the Bye Bye Birdie device was successful. However, while the device did reduce the number of pigeons and seagulls, it did not eradicate them fully or to a high enough level to justify funding more of the devices.

Board says thanks Whoever it was who penned the quote, “Those who can, do. Those who can do more volunteer”, certainly recognised the value of volunteers in our community. This month we are hosting a thank you celebration for many of the volunteers who make a difference in our Hibiscus and Bays Local Board area, from helping out in our libraries, to planting trees or creating and maintaining tracks, manning our Citizens Advice Bureaux and Arts Centres and food banks, to even wading in to the Maygrove stormwater pond to clean out the weed on a yearly basis. Without their help and support we would not, as a local board, be able to function effectively. It is no secret that when we came in to existence just over three years ago, we were per capita one of the lowest funded local boards. Rather than become too despondent we looked at the strengths of our community: our people and particularly our strong volunteer base. With our first Local Board Plan we set an ambitious work programme and have largely accomplished it, helped by our volunteer workforce, and achieved other objectives as well. Recently I was pleased to see the Weekend Herald focus on our Weiti Wildlink project. With the help of volunteers and the pro bono support of corporates like Fulton Hogan we will achieve the first stage of this ambitious project to restore an industrial wasteland by improving the Weiti River environment, removing all the rubbish and weed and building a gravel track to extend and connect, in stages, Silverdale with Arkles Bay. Without the support of Conservation Volunteers, who cleared the area and the hundreds of locals who signed up to plant the 13000 plus native trees, we could never have attempted such an ambitious project. It started with seed funding from our local board we are now hopeful of attracting further funding from other agencies for the next stages. Another local project also gained national publicity this week – this time on National Radio. SOSSI raised funding and in 2010 built the predator free fence at Shakespear Regional Park and they have also been undertaking extensive planting within the fenced area. The radio programme followed a group of ecologists who were completing a nocturnal hunt for Pacific Geckos, a now threatened NZ species. Their results showed that the gecko numbers are now flourishing and showing just how effective the fencing has been. Heartened by this success the local branch of Forest and Bird has launched an equally ambitious programme to achieve a Pest Free Peninsula. With the support of our local board and parks staff they are concentrating first on eradicating pests and weeds in our smaller local parks along the peninsula. We are now looking at our next three-year local board plan and what our objectives should be. The good news is that the governing body has recognised our funding dilemma and its new funding formula of 90 percent population numbers, five percent deprivation and five percent for the geographical area covered ,will give us more money. We are really pleased about this as we will have further funding to support volunteer and community based place-making initiatives like these, which, thanks to the 100 percent support of our volunteers, help make our community a safer and better place to live in.

Malcolm has lived on the Hibiscus Coast for seven years after moving here from the UK. He is managing director of Ecos Homes and an advocate for sustainable housing, as well as resilient, socially inclusive communities. He says local issues include traffic congestion, the need for public transport improvements and health, because the area is not served by a local hospital. The health of the Hauraki Gulf, and maintaining the Northland rail link are also key concerns. Mr McAll says if Penlink is really justified, it will happen, although his preference is for public transport and the Green model of better local employment to reduce traffic congestion. Through his career in the building industry he has been involved with NGOs concerned with environmental stewardship and conflict resolution. His interests include social history and architectural archaeology.

The Green Party chose an off the grid home in Dairy Flat to promote its energy policy this month. Speaking at the event on June 8, Green Party energy spokesperson Gareth Hughes said the party’s policy is about lowering power bills and helping households “break free from the big power companies and produce some of their own power”. It includes low cost loans for solar power and prioritising renewable energy sources. The Wood family home includes doubleglazing, solar panels and a high level of insulation. Efficient use of power means the home is completely off grid, despite having multiple computers and all the modern comforts and appliances. Golf club targets pests
Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird volunteers are closing in on Whangaparaoa’s wild pests, with Whangaparaoa Golf Club the most recent organisation to join the Pest Free Peninsula campaign. At the end of last month, Peter Pearce, who is a member of the golf club, and Forest & Bird, put a total of 17 bait stations and one stoat trap around the perimeter of the 40ha golf course, and near the swamp in its centre. The bait is in pellet form and enclosed in sturdy wooden bird, cat and dogproof boxes. The amount of bait taken over the last few weeks shows that rats are active at the Army Bay site. Peter says the location of the golf club potentially allows a “screen” of similar pest prevention measures to be put in place right across the peninsula, as long as residents of Gulf Harbour also get involved. As open space is rapidly replaced by housing development around Orewa Primary, the school is increasing its efforts to be environmentally friendly. This term, two teachers Angelique de Jong and Ana Paterson, introduced an after school Wastebusters Group that aims to learn more about the school’s natural environment as well as reducing waste and fostering sustainable behaviour. Scraps from children’s lunches are already disposed of in a worm farm, and the school also has vegetable beds and compost bins. One of the first tasks tackled by the
Wastebusters has been reducing waste going to landfill as a result of the school’s fortnightly sausage sizzles. The solutions identified by the children included composting, diverting scraps to families who have pigs or chickens and reusing some of the plastic waste. Orewa Primary also recently joined Auckland Council’s Wastewise School Programme, which supports schools reducing the waste sent to landfill. Locally, Stella Maris and Orewa College are also signed up to the programme. Wastewise facilitator Tori Christie says Orewa Primary may also trial rat traps from Hibiscus Coast Forest & Bird.

Youngsters relish conservation role This year Hibiscus Coast kids are participating in an exciting programme of conservation activities. Samantha Cuckow and Genevieve Taylor have resurrected the local Kiwi Conservation Club (the junior branch of Forest and Bird) with gusto, taking local kids on outings to explore the seashore, bush reserves, Leigh Marine Lab and a special tour of the Auckland Zoo. Back in March was one of the Club’s biggest projects – a dozen Kiwi Conservation Club kids met at the Red Beach Surf Club ready to do battle with rubbish. Armed with gloves and plastic bags, they scoured the beachfront looking for unwanted flotsam washed up from Cyclone Lusi the weekend before and anything else that had been left behind from untidy or lazy Kiwis. The children enthusiastically picked up anything and everything they could find. Rubbish included an enormous chisel, a varied array of plastic, fishing lines, bottles, cans, and cigarette butts. Incredibly a local college bucket hat was discovered hiding in among the rocks belonging to a boy whom one of our members knew very well! The hat was collected to be returned to the owner after washing, along with a matching pair of jandals (not found together however), which was placed in the lost property bin at the surf club. The most unusual item of ‘rubbish’ was found behind the surf club – the surf club’s IRV and kayak trailer that had been pushed into the river. Our two oldest members and a parent hauled it out of the river and it was hoisted back onto the bank to be taken back to the club. The children and adults did a fantastic job cleaning up Red Beach – in all 12 shopping bags were filled to the gunnels. These were duly placed into two prepaid rubbish bags left beside a public rubbish bin to be collected the next day by the local rubbish collection company, as the depot had already closed for the day. Afterwards the children and adults explored the cliffs and rock pools from Red Beach to Orewa as it was low tide, ensuring a great end to a thoroughly satisfying meeting. Barriers still in place for women auto engineers Despite what you’d think was equal opportunity in employment in NZ, the road for women wanting to enter the world of auto engineering still has obstacles in place. Mainly, these are to do with the attitudes of some of the men who still dominate the automotive industry, and it has not been enough to keep Katie Harris from her dream of working with cars. The former Orewa College student says that initially she thought her keen interest in cars, which began at the age of 17 and enabled her to customise and maintain her Toyota Levin, should remain as a hobby “because it did not seem like a career for women”. She toyed with the idea of working as a beauty therapist, but soon realised this wasn’t for her and so took the plunge and is currently studying towards a Certificate of Auto Engineering at Unitec. There are 30 students in her intake and Katie is one of three girls – something she says the tutors have noted as a positive sign, as this is the largest number of girls in years to take the course. Before she started at Unitec, Katie rang around a few workshops to ask if they would hire female staff and was
shocked to find that three out of five said ‘no’. “One said he’d have to build another bathroom if he took on a woman, and another said simply that he didn’t want females in his workshop,” she says. “But one said hiring a female mechanic could be an advantage to his business.” Undeterred, Katie has thrived on the course and says she definitely made the right career decision. “It’s a really good course and my confidence has grown a lot,” she says. “Back in the day it was a very physical job, but now we have the tools that are easier to use regardless of strength. I enjoy the mental challenge of trouble shooting on different types of cars.” She was also surprised to discover an aptitude for welding. She says her experience on the course has demonstrated that women bring different skills to the job. “Women have a good eye for detail in this kind of work and make sure things are done right,” Katie says. She hopes that one day she can open her own workshop. “Sometimes women are not confident talking with professionals about cars, so being a woman could be a huge advantage there.”

Car insurance choices vary It’s important for all drivers to have some form of car insurance and it’s also important to find a policy that fits your budget. There are two main types of car insurance – comprehensive and third party. Comprehensive covers the cost of damage to your vehicle, plus the cost of damaging other people’s cars and property. Many drivers take out third party vehicle insurance, as it is more affordable than comprehensive. While it doesn’t cover damage to your vehicle, it does cover the cost of damaging other people’s cars and property. AA Insurance head of product Simon Hobbs says if price is an issue or your car isn’t worth much, then third party insurance can be an option. “It costs around $4 a week, which is less than a cup of coffee,” he says. “On the other hand, if you stick with comprehensive, you could choose to exclude benefits, such as rental car cover or glass cover, in exchange for a lower premium.” For those over 25-years-old, another way is to opt for a higher excess,
which is the amount required towards a claim for each event that occurs and is covered by the policy. The excess is only paid if a claim is made. “Another way to save is to make your car more secure,” Simon says. “You can usually save on your insurance by making it more difficult for thieves to break into or steal your car, such as having a NZ Standards Approved car alarm or an immobiliser professionally installed.” You should also be aware that the type of car you drive will affect your premium, he says. According to AA Insurance claims data, some cars are stolen or involved in accidents more often than others, which can be attributed to the driver as well as the type of vehicle they choose to drive. This information helps calculate an individual’s vehicle insurance premium. “However, you shouldn’t make your car insurance decision based purely on price. It’s important to look at the benefits of the policy, too, and choose the one that’s right for you.”
Mail may not get through
A freight van carrying mail and parcels collected from NZ Post outlets and post boxes throughout the Hibiscus Coast, caught fire on June 9 while travelling between Silverdale and Albany. The van driver was shaken but unharmed, however many postal items were not as lucky. A large number of items were burnt, water damaged or badly charred and some were completely destroyed. Most of the items had NZ addresses, but a few were for overseas destinations. NZ Post is advising customers to expect significant delays while it recovers as many items as possible. Rugby to the rescue In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the road north from Auckland through Silverdale, Orewa and Waiwera to Warkworth was notoriously bad and even in the 1920s was almost impassable in wet weather. This report of a car journey in 1924 gives some idea of the prevailing conditions. On September 29, 1924, Mr H Holliday, the Auckland representative for Rugby Cars (an American-made car) was asked if he would drive Dr Sydney Allen from Devonport to Warkworth for a very serious operation that afternoon. Due to commitments in Auckland the doctor was unable to leave until 2pm, by which time the coastal steamer Hauti, which was the usual mode of transport from the main Auckland wharf and Devonport, to Warkworth, would have left. Rugby cars were very popular and, with 21 inch wheels, they were high off the ground so could cope with mud and small streams. They were made individually and, when Ford introduced mass production, they could not compete and went out of business. Mr Holliday’s Rugby car, with the doctor on board, left Devonport at 2.40pm but long before they reached Silverdale the rain had set in and the road was very bad. By the time they reached Hatfields Beach the tide was well in under the old bridge. Mr Hatfield measured the depth of the water at about 60cm. However, it was a case of getting through or not reaching their destination. When the car was in the deepest part, the water reached to the headlamps but despite this, the engine never faltered. The road to Waiwera was appalling but they ploughed on through the mud and arrived there ahead of the boat, eventually reaching Warkworth at 6pm. This motoring episode was considered quite a feat at the time, and was reported in the local paper on October 8, 1924. There was no mention of how the operation went, but the doctor was impressed by the car’s performance. He said he got in touch with Holliday’s Motors through an ad in the NZ Herald which stated that “the Rugby car was the first to drive up the coast this year”.

Careers boosted by links to community groups Cornish Truck & Van of Silverdale is a fine example of how community involvement and business can work in harmony, resulting in greater local employment. Owner Kevin Cornish competes and coaches at Red Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. His four children are also members, and his business is one of the club’s sponsors and takes care of its trailers. Competing with the club has led to connections with Orewa Surf Lifesaving members. In winter, Kevin is assistant coach for his son’s J5 team at Silverdale United Rugby Football Club. This has not only been satisfying from a family and community perspective, but has also been helpful when Kevin is looking for big, strong lads to be apprenticed to his team of mechanics, or just to help out and gain work experience. Kevin’s team services and repairs everything from utes to the biggest truck and trailer units and he says that fitness and muscle are essential when working on vehicles of this size, however those are not the only things he is looking for in an apprentice. “Sports club involvement means you get to know the characters of the guys, as well as how strong and competitive

they are,” he says. “They also know a bit about me, so there’s a connection there straight away.” Currently Cornish Truck & Van has eight MITO apprentices in various stages of their training – five are from surf clubs and the others are from Silverdale Rugby Club. Kevin says there is a big shortage of mechanics in NZ, so each is valued. He can’t find fault with any of those who have come to him through the sports clubs. “They are keen and have a good work ethic,” he says. “Punctuality is a way to see how much they really want to be there, and all ours are there, as part of the team, from first thing in the morning.” The system must be working, as Cornish Truck & Van is on track to open its third branch this month. The business began six years ago in Glenfield and opened a Silverdale branch in 2012. The third branch, also in Silverdale, is needed due to local demand. Kevin started the business after moving here from the UK, with a single van and within a year had a garage and employed five mechanics. He now employs 16 mechanics. “There is lots of work around for young guys who choose this career,” he says.

Driving Miss Daisy certainly gets its passengers from A to B and back, but there the comparison with a taxi service ends. The level of personal attention, time and care devoted to passengers makes Driving Miss Daisy a true companion driving service. It’s a national franchise, with more than 80 vehicles operating around the country and specialises in offering safe, reliable transport and companionship for mature, disabled or young people who cannot drive and need extra care. Recently the local franchise has been taken up by long time Stanmore Bay residents Brenda and Ross Yeager. Brenda is well known to anyone who has visited the Council offices in Orewa, having worked there for 23 years, including 12 years at the front desk. Working with people is her forte, and so far Driving Miss Daisy clients are proving to be great company. They have included seniors going to appointments and children that need transport to and from school and after-school activities. “The best part is that you’re helping people to be more independent,” Brenda says. “Plus I really enjoy the company.” Each journey is tailored to the passenger’s needs, whether that be taking a pet to the vet, heading to the

airport or taking a scenic drive with a group of friends. Brenda can stay with people during medical appointments and provide updates to family who cannot be there. No need to worry about the meter ticking over, as each service is pre-quoted, based on time not kilometres. Brenda’s husband Ross is also involved with the business, taking care of all the admin. He says a bonus for the business is the fact that Driving Miss Daisy recently joined the list of Total Mobility Scheme providers – this is a Government funded initiative that provides subsidies for the transport costs of people with impairments. I always find that talking about problems over a cuppa with friends definitely seems to help. Problem shared, problem halved and all that. But talking about digestive problems just isn’t the done thing. That’s why even though over half of us suffer with some sort of digestion problem, we suffer in silence. The digestive system can create many different problems: from bloating to indigestion, constipation to heartburn. Indigestion and heartburn might seem very similar but they are actually two different conditions. You get indigestion when your stomach is irritated or inflamed. You might feel pain or discomfort in your stomach, feel sick or burp. Heartburn, on the other hand, is a burning pain caused by your stomach acid flowing back up your food pipe. These conditions may require different treatments so it’s important you get them diagnosed by a health care professional. Constipation is another common digestive problem. If you do find yourself comparing notes over a latte, remember it’s not about how often, but rather a change that would indicate that something isn’t right with you. Every body is different. For some it’s three times a day, others three times a week. But constipation is when your bowel motions occur less frequently than usual for you, and/or are difficult to pass. Some digestive disorders are very difficult to diagnose, for example Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which affects around 20 percent of New Zealanders. You might suffer from a lot of bloating which can be rather uncomfortable. Other symptoms include pain or discomfort in your abdomen, constipation or diarrhoea (or alternating between the two). There are many medicines that can help with digestive problems and there are also many lifestyle factors that can help you prevent or manage your digestion problem more easily. For example, a new study shows that exercise may help with IBS symptoms. And raising the head of your bed can help if you suffer from heartburn at night. It’s also important to remember that there are some conditions that may seem like a harmless common digestion problem, but may be something more serious. That’s why you should always check with your healthcare professional if you have concerns. So remember if you are suffering with a digestive problem, you are not alone out there. But perhaps it’s worthwhile discussing with your health professional first and grab that cuppa with friends later.

Biscuits, from Best Baking (Hyndman Publishing). We compiled this book to present simplified baking recipes for the modern kitchen.
Almost Anzac Biscuits
For about 50 biscuits 100g butter ¼ cup golden syrup ½–1 tsp vanilla or almond essence 1 cup sugar 1 cup (instant) rolled oats 1 cup desiccated coconut 1 cup standard (plain) flour ½ tsp baking soda 2 Tbsp warm water Heat oven to 170°C (160°C fanbake), with the rack just below the middle. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Melt the butter in a fairly large saucepan. Add golden syrup and stir until blended. Take off the heat and add the next five ingredients to the saucepan. Stir everything together then add baking soda dissolved in the water. If mixture seems too crumbly to shape easily, add 1–2 Tbsp extra water. Using your hands, shape into walnut-sized (or smaller) balls and place on baking paper on baking trays, leaving room for spreading. Bake for about 15 minutes, until evenly golden brown. While biscuits are warm, lift them onto a cooling rack. When cold, store in an airtight container. Variations: Add 1 cup of either chopped roasted peanuts or chopped walnuts before adding sugar. Star performances in Orewa for Matariki Musical WWI remembrance

Soccer club grows It’s no secret that many local sports clubs are bursting at the seams, including one of the Coast’s largest – Hibiscus Coast Association Football Club. The club, which is in its 40th year, has more than 900 playing members this season, most in the 5–17 year age bracket, and is continuing to grow. With the changing rooms addition completed at its Stanmore Bay Reserve base, the club is in the process of extending its clubrooms. The plan is to cover nearly half of the big deck, expanding the kitchen, improving the toilets and making the facility more suitable for the community to hire for meetings. Plans and quotes have been

obtained and now it is a matter of raising the funds for this to happen. Club president Scott Beard will make a presentation seeking support from the local board this month and says assistance from funding organisations will also be sought. He says the club sees the extended space as multi-use. “Upgraded clubrooms should be seen as a community facility,” Scott says. “We have already approached other sporting organisations and no doubt there are community groups who may be looking for a facility to use during the day.” Any organisation that would like to be involved email president@hbcafc.org.nz.

An opportunity to remember the sacrifices made by World War I soldiers is being held in Red Beach on June 28 – the date that Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie of Austria were assassinated in 1914, marking the official start of the war. A Time to Remember has been organised by the Respite NZ Charitable Trust and Platinum Community Care and features live music and presentations by NZ Navy officers, including the historian who works at the Devonport Navy Museum. The Kapa Haka group from Orewa North Primary will perform and there will be items on display from the Estuary Arts Centre’s recent World War I exhibition. The event is at the Salvation Army Community Hall in Greenview Lane, Red Beach at 10am. Entry is $5 per person including a light lunch. Wetland planting extended
In a collaborative partnership between students, the Auckland Council stormwater unit and the Education for Sustainability Team, more than 3000 plants will be planted across 6000sqm of land on the Stanmore Bay stream embankment alongside Whangaparaoa College. Planting began last week. This is the first of three stages planned to transform the embankment, and has been funded by a Council grant. The school has also incorporated biodiversity elements into its curriculum that relate to the project.

Help shape local dog access rules Submissions 12 June-23 July Hibiscus and Bays Local Board is proposing changes to where you can walk your dog. The biggest changes are proposed on parks adjoining beaches in Hibiscus and Bays (Waiwera to Campbells Bay) excluding the regional parks. The Auckland Council Policy on Dogs gives local boards the authority to decide dog access on local parks and beaches. The changes proposed would amend the policy. Hearings and deliberations will be held before any changes are applied.

Funds needed for shot at national championship title The Hibiscus Coast U15 Boys Basketball Team, pictured qualified to compete in the National Tournament, which takes place in Wellington next month. The team of 10 earned its place by achieving a top four position in the recent Zone 1 Auckland National Qualifying Tournament. Some members of the team took part in last year’s U13 National tournament and came home with the championship trophy. The U15s are practicing twice a week with coaches Tony and Chanel Pompallier, and are hungry to bring another title home to the Hibiscus Coast. The team, together with manager Andrea Dance and parents is now intent on fundraising to help get the team to the competition.
